What is the EPBD, and does it impact my managed buildings?

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD - 2024/1275/EU) is a European Union framework designed to radically reduce building energy consumption and carbon emissions. It drives sustainability by legally requiring the installation of advanced Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS). As a European directive, it must be transposed into active national law by June 1, 2026, achieving its goals through national renovation plans and decarbonized heating and cooling systems. If your properties meet specific heating, ventilation, or air conditioning (HVAC) capacity thresholds, compliance is mandatory: > Buildings above 290 kW: Non-residential buildings with effective rated outputs for heating or air-conditioning systems over 290 kW must already have BACS installed (Deadline: December 31, 2024). > Buildings above 70 kW: By December 31, 2029, the threshold drops to 70 kW—a mandate that will sweep in and cover the vast majority of standard commercial buildings.
